Is QuickBooks Desktop Going Away?

What Intuit has actually announced, what changes for your version, and how to decide whether to stay or move.

★ 5.0 on Google113 reviews1,000+ clientsAll 50 states, fully remote

Quick Answer
Not all at once. Intuit says Desktop 2024, including Enterprise 24.0, has no sunset deadline and will not be discontinued in May 2027. What has ended: new Pro Plus, Premier Plus, and Mac Plus subscriptions for new US customers, and payroll, bank feeds, payments, and security updates on Desktop 2023 after May 31, 2026. So check your version year first. It decides whether you have a problem today or a choice to make on your own schedule.

What Intuit Has Announced

Three separate changes that often get reported as one

Plenty of articles still give a 2027 end date for Desktop. Intuit dropped that plan for the 2024 release, so check the date on anything you read. Everything below comes from Intuit's own pages as of October 30, 2026.

Desktop 2024 (Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Enterprise 24.0)

What Intuit says: It is moving away from the 3-year lifecycle, this release has no sunset deadline, and it will not be discontinued in May 2027.

What it means for you: No forced move today. Accept the in-product updates when prompted.

Intuit

Desktop 2023 (Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, Enterprise 23.0)

What Intuit says: Discontinued after May 31, 2026. Live support, Desktop Payroll, Desktop Payments, online bank feeds, and critical security updates ended.

What it means for you: Act now, especially if you run payroll in this file.

Intuit

New Pro Plus, Premier Plus, and Mac Plus subscriptions

What Intuit says: Not sold to new US customers after September 30, 2024. Existing subscribers can keep renewing.

What it means for you: A sales change, not a shutdown. It applies to the US only.

Intuit

QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise

What Intuit says: Enterprise products are not impacted by the stop-sell. Enterprise 23.0 still lost services with the rest of the 2023 release.

What it means for you: Still sold, but your version year still matters.

Check Your Version

This takes about ten seconds

Open QuickBooks and press F2 or Ctrl+1 (Command+1 on a Mac). The product name at the top of the Product Information window shows your edition and year.

  • 2024 or Enterprise 24.0: no announced end date. You can decide on your own timeline.
  • 2023 or older: upgrade or move. Do not wait for the next quarter if you run payroll in this file.
Watch Out

If you run payroll on a discontinued version

Intuit says taxes are not calculated automatically after discontinuation, Assisted Payroll subscriptions are deactivated and forms are not filed for you, and Basic or Enhanced Payroll paychecks may be inaccurate. Intuit's notice

Your Three Options

Staying put can be the right answer

Stay on Desktop

Fits when: You are on 2024 or can upgrade, your books are clean, and a Desktop workflow such as inventory or job costing is hard to replace.

Watch for: Intuit says existing Plus and Enterprise subscribers can get the 2024 release at no extra cost through their plan. Confirm your renewal price with Intuit before you decide, and keep accepting updates.

Move to QuickBooks Online

Fits when: You want browser access, several people in the file at once, and an accountant who can work in the books directly.

Watch for: Inventory history starts on the migration date, bank feeds must be reconnected, and the two products do not sync after the move.

Move to another system

Fits when: Neither QuickBooks product handles your inventory, manufacturing, or reporting needs, and the business can support a larger implementation.

Watch for: Intuit's migration tool only moves files within QuickBooks, so plan for a separate conversion and test it against real month-end reports.

What Your CPA Should Check First

The part a software comparison leaves out

A conversion can finish without an error and still leave you with books that do not agree with your tax return. These five checks catch that before it becomes a problem at filing time.

1. Tie opening balances to the last filed return

Run the balance sheet at your cutover date and compare it to the return and your CPA's year-end entries. Migrating a difference copies it into the new file.

2. Pull fixed asset and depreciation records

The IRS says to keep property records until the limitations period expires for the year you dispose of the property. That can reach far past the history you plan to move. Source

3. Pick a payroll break point

Form 941 is quarterly and W-2s are annual, so a quarter or year boundary is easier to verify. If you use Desktop Payroll, Intuit says to wait 2 to 3 days after your last payroll run, then move before your next payroll date. Source

4. Match the accounting method in your test reports

Intuit recommends running a Profit and Loss and a Balance Sheet in both products with All Dates selected and the same accounting method, then confirming the totals match. Source

5. Keep the original company file

IRS examiners can request a backup of your accounting file, and the IRS says a new or modified company file is not a copy of the books of original entry. Treat the migrated file as your working books, not as your archive. Source

Illustrative example: a $5,500 difference that moves with the file

A company's Desktop file shows $182,400 of retained earnings at December 31. The balance sheet on its filed return shows $176,900. The $5,500 gap is a year-end depreciation entry that was on the CPA's workpapers and never got posted to Desktop.

Migrate without checking and QuickBooks Online opens with the same $5,500 difference, now with no one remembering why. Post the entry or document the difference before cutover. Some book-tax differences are legitimate. The goal is to be able to explain each one.

How long to keep that original file depends on your situation. The IRS generally points to 3 years for income tax records and at least 4 years for employment tax records, with longer periods in some cases. IRS record retention

When to Make the Move

Pick a clean boundary if your version allows it

For most businesses on a supported version, January 1 is the cleanest cutover. The new year's books and payroll start in one system, and 2026 closes and files from the old one. A quarter start is the next best choice. Nothing requires either date.

Watch the account clock too. Intuit allows the import only into a QuickBooks Online account less than 90 days old, or 180 days if an accountant creates it, and very large files can take longer or need condensing. Intuit

If the books need work first, handle that as its own bookkeeping cleanup project. A move is also a good time to rebuild your chart of accounts. When you are ready, see how we run a QuickBooks Desktop to Online migration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is QuickBooks Desktop going away in 2026?

No shutdown of the whole product has been announced. Desktop 2023 lost its connected services and security updates after May 31, 2026, while Intuit says Desktop 2024 has no sunset deadline. Your answer depends on the version year you are running.

Will QuickBooks Desktop be discontinued in May 2027?

Not the 2024 release, according to Intuit. Its Desktop 2024 page, updated September 18, 2026, says the product will not be discontinued in May 2027. Older articles that give a 2027 end date predate that change.

Will my old version stop working?

Intuit's discontinuation notice lists the services you lose rather than saying the program stops opening. That is not a reason to stay. Without security updates your data is more exposed, and Intuit warns that Basic or Enhanced Payroll paychecks may be inaccurate on a discontinued version.

Is QuickBooks Enterprise going away?

Intuit says Desktop Enterprise is not impacted by the stop-sell, and Enterprise 24.0 is covered by the same no-sunset statement as the rest of the 2024 release. Enterprise 23.0 was still discontinued after May 31, 2026, so check your version year.

Do I have to move to QuickBooks Online?

Not because of a deadline, if you are on Desktop 2024. Move when the business needs what Online does better. If you are on 2023 or older, you need to do something now, and upgrading is one of the options.

How long do I have to migrate after opening a QuickBooks Online account?

Intuit limits the import to accounts less than 90 days old, or 180 days if an accountant creates the account. An older account blocks the import, so do not subscribe until your cutover plan is ready.

Will all of my data transfer?

Not everything. Bank connections must be redone, Mac bank rules must be recreated, inventory history starts on the migration date, and attachment bundles must be under 5GB. Intuit's tool copies the file and does not delete or change your Desktop file.
